Some argue that its equally as important as the resume. Of course, every job will place a different amount of weight on the cover letter, but however important the cover letter is to an employer, there are some mistakes that you absolutely should not make. Here are some of the common pitfalls to avoid when writing your letter. Mistake Bad spelling or grammar This mistake is the most common, and what makes it so grievous is the fact that its completely avoidable. There is no excuse for bad spelling or grammar in a cover letter. If youre not sure its perfect, have someone read over your work before you send it. You dont get a second chance at a first impression, and grammar mistakes in a cover letter tell an employer that you arenât paying attention at best, and that youre uneducated at worst. Mistake To Whom It May Concern While some form letters are written very well, they wont really help you show that youve done your research on the company. Never let your cover letter be generic. Use a last name in your address if at all possible. The To Whom it May Concern intro just shows you dont know how to pick up a phone and call to see who the hiring manager is, or you dont know how to use Google. If you absolutely cannot find the name of a person in the company, make sure the address at least fits the position. For example, if youre applying for a sales job, try Sales Team Hiring Manager. Mistake Using the company to further your own goals Remember, that any employers wants to know how you will be an asset to the company, not the other way around. Dont use your cover letter to explain how the company will help you achieve your dreams of being a clerical assistant. Explain how your particular skill set will increase productivity, and how your work in the past has demonstrated this. Mistake Leaving it all up to the employer Dont end your cover letter with a line like I hope to hear from you soon. This takes things out of your hands. You want full control over the situation. Instead, say something like I will email again on X day to arrange an interview. If youre not bold enough for this, at least make a commitment to follow up with the employer. Just be sure that if you set up a time for follow up, you comply without fail. Mistake Ignoring the job posting The job posting ad may have important instructions about how to submit a resume, and what needs to be included. If you ignore the ad, you run the risk of missing critical information, and having even a perfectly written cover letter ignored.

For most accounting firms a minimum of a bachelors in accounting is required. Average Salary: $49,171 Mechanic Whether itâs working on cars, aircraft or any other machinery, mechanics donât have to interact with others much and the pay isnât too terrible either. Many vocational schools offer accelerated programs where you can learn the skills in as little as 6-months. You will need a couple of years of on the job training as well to really master the trade. Average Salary: $36,818 X Ray TechnologistAn X-Ray technologist arranges patients for radiological examinations and produces radiographs (x-rays) to aid in the diagnosis of medical problems. To become a X- Ray technologist an associates degree from an accredited program is required. Registration as a technologist by the A.R.R.T is also required. Itâs also really suitable for those with SAD as they require little social interaction. The pay is also pretty good for these positions and you donât really need a degree to get started. If youâre serious about advancing and increasing your earning potential, then a 2 year degree and a license may be necessary. Chef A Chef is an excellent choice for those who like to cook. 4 Phrases Your Boss LOVES To Hear - Work It Daily Managing up is a challenge all professionals face at one time or another. After all, everyone answers to someone. And learning effective ways to advance the relationship is a skill all professionals can use every day. If you really want to make your boss a fan, think of ways to work these four phrases into your workweek: âHereâs a potential solutionâ Bosses hear a LOT of problems. A. Lot. And more often than not, they are expected to come up with the solution. The thing is; if it isnât their problem, they are not going to actively seek out solutions. Therefore, when you come to the boss with a problem, immediately follow it up with a proposed solution. This accomplishes two things. First, it shows your manager that you are solution-oriented. You took the time to examine the problem and think about ways to address it. Secondly, your solutions are essentially saving the boss time and energy and those are both gifts to your manager. This approach is a huge win for you and the boss. âHereâs an ideaâ You should be a student of your company. You should be very familiar with the company goals, mission, and vision. You should also have a very good understanding of the companyâs challenges. When you know these challenges, you should spend some time each week working on ideas to solve those challenges that the company faces. When you go to your manager to say you have an idea to impact the companyâs bottom line, everyone wins. Bosses should love to hear ideas on how to make things more efficient and more profitable. Be looking for these ideas whenever you have down time at work. âLet me show youâ A picture is worth 1,000 words, and we are deep in the âshow meâ era. In time-strapped days, it is so much easier to show someone something than it is to tell them. When pitching something to a boss or sharing an idea or even solving a problem, show him/her what you are talking about. Sketch it out, give them a flow chart, something visual and talk them through it. If you can, make a quick prototype. It is so much easier than using just your words when the chances are good that the boss is distracted. Think about it: When you show people what you are saying, you have captured two of their senses, hearing, and seeing. If you give them something to hold â" even better (three senses). This gets their attention and allows them to truly evaluate what you are trying to do for the boss or the company. Always try to show people what you are talking about. It allows them to react to your idea in a more connected way. âI could use a little mentoringâ Bosses are not solely responsible for your career. This is your responsibility. If you need new challenges, want new opportunities, it is up to you to scope those out and present them to the boss. If you donât know how to do something or think that you could build out your skills even further, it is up to you to ask for mentor-ship. As the protégé, you must take the active role in carving out time for the relationship. When you seek mentorship from your boss, know that it may not be the boss that becomes your mentor. You boss may not even be the right mentor, however, they can be the one who facilitates an introduction. When you ask for this type of guidance, your boss knows that you own your experience and will work to support you. Building a solid relationship with your boss is key to getting where you want to go with your career. These relationships will follow you throughout your career. These bosses will likely one day be the person you call on to be a reference. And when it comes time to be a reference for you, you want them to say that you were solution-oriented, respectful of their time and full of an entrepreneurial spirit.
